Four Thousand Years of Palestine

Ancient 17th-century cartographic map of the Levant and Palestine

Cartographia Sacra

The land, drawn and redrawn by empires — yet always itself.

From Canaanite city-states to the maps of European pilgrims, the cartography of Palestine tells a story of continuity: a land named, inhabited, and remembered across every era of human history.

  1. c. 3000 BCE

    The Canaanite Dawn

The land of Canaan cradles the first cities — Jericho, among the oldest continuously inhabited settlements on Earth — where agriculture, pottery, and the earliest walls rise from the Jordan valley.

  2. c. 1200 BCE

    The Philistine Coast

The Sea Peoples settle the southern coast, lending the name 'Philistia' — Palestine — to the region. City-states of Gaza, Ashkelon, and Ashdod flourish as crossroads of trade between empires.

  3. 634 CE

    The Conquest & The Caliphate

The Arab-Muslim conquest opens a new epoch. Jerusalem becomes the third holiest city; the Dome of the Rock rises upon the ancient stone, gilding the skyline for a thousand years.

  4. 1099–1291

    The Crusader Interlude

Latin kingdoms carve a brief century from the Levant before the Ayyubid and Mamluk dynasties restore the land, rebuilding cities, commerce, and the olive groves of the highlands.

  5. 1516–1917

    Four Centuries of Ottoman Rule

Under the Ottomans, Palestine weaves a tapestry of faiths — Muslim, Christian, and Jew — across Jerusalem, Nablus, Hebron, and Gaza. The land's markets and citrus groves prosper.

  6. 1948 – Present

    Dispossession & Resilience

The Nakba scatters a people; yet the olive tree endures. From Ramallah to Gaza, from the diaspora to the homeland, the Palestinian story becomes one of memory, return, and unbroken sovereignty of spirit.

The Olive Endures

Roots older than any border — the olive tree is the signature of Palestine.

Some groves have yielded their fruit for over a thousand years. They are harvested, pressed, and passed on — a living inheritance that no exile can sever.
